Etienne De Crecy is an unusual
genius in today’s house music, a songwriter whose
hit albums are perhaps the greatest proof that
the European, and especially French, school of
house music has reached artistic high points comparable
to original American house talents. After releasing
the visionary “Pansoul” album under the name of
Motorbass in 1996, De Crecy imposed himself as
one of the brightest talents on the continent.
His work with a group under the name of “Superdiscount”
for which he was in charge of orchestration, composition
and production, employing some of his old friends
such as Air, Alex Gopher and Phillipe Zdar (Cassius),
he opened the door for jazz-inspired French house
music, through which St Germain, Daft Punk and
Bob Sinclair all have passed. The legendary, sexy
rhythmic ride of “Prix Choc” with well-known Jamaican
samples, became and underground club hit for all
times.
As if that was not enough, Etienne De Crecy himself,
with his “Tempovision” release in 2001, topped
charts worldwide and began to be heard on MTV
as the music for a series of phantasmagoric animated
music videos directed by his brother (Geoffroy
De Crecy is regarded as one of France’s most talented
comic strip artists). These unforgettable videos
created for the songs “Am I Wrong,” “Scratched,”
and “Tempovision,” pushed the limits of television
music presentation, placing the desired message
right where it had been least expected to appear.
Alex Gopher, at the same time,
proved his talent on his solo albums, “You, My
Baby & I” (1999) and “Wuz” (2002) with which
he charted several big hits, of which the most
well-known is “The Child” which features an irresistible
Billie Holiday sample. Just as in the case of
De Crecy, Gopher left his mark on the worldwide
charts, although his music is still the most exciting
in the club, as it was designed to be heard. The
numerous remixes of his songs testify to this.
Etienne De Crecy and Alex Gopher performed in
Belgrade’s Sava Center in celebration of the International
Day of Music on June 21, 2003, sponsored by the
French Cultural Center, which recognizes these
two disc jockeys as domestic artists whose music
has lasting value. This was in effect, one of
the best dance parties of the year. This which
was presented to us then will now be continued
with De Crecy’s long awaited continuation of his
most famous project, “Superdiscount 2,” in which
Alex Gopher, Phillip Zdar (Cassius), Julien Delfaud,
Boom Bass and DJ Mehdi all participated.
We are very honored to present as the beginning
of the Smirnoff Experience party series here,
“Superdiscount 2,” a project that saw the light
of day in Europe at the end of September. The
Belgrade performance of this team will be one
of the first on their European tour with which
the album is being promoted. It is in the format
of a one hour live set in which Etienne, Alex
and Julien Delfaud will participate, followed
by a three hour DJ performance by Gopher and De
Crecy which will last until the end of the night.
The warm up and introduction for this show will
be provided by Gordan Paunovic.
